As a therapist, one of the questions I frequently get is for book recommendations.
For a long time, I hesitated to recommend books, even to friends or family. I'm not entirely sure why. Perhaps it's the fear that a book I found transformative might not resonate as deeply with someone else. Maybe it's the personal nature of reading—how a book speaks to you at a specific moment in your life, shaped by your unique experiences and emotions. Or it might be the weight of responsibility, knowing that my suggestion carries the hope of offering comfort.
I decided to make a change. I’m not “advising” you to read these books; I'm sharing how and why they impacted me. If any of them resonate with you, feel free to give them a try.
Here are 7 books that have had a great impact on me, not only as a practitioner but also in my personal life.
1. Healing through the Dark Emotions: The Wisdom of Grief, Fear, and Despair by Miriam Greenspan
“Our only protection is in our interconnectedness. This has always been the message of the dark emotions when they are experienced most deeply and widely.”
I’ve read this book a couple of times. It’s a moving and healing experience in itself. Greenspan is a psychotherapist with a profound understanding of the human psyche. In this book, she offers a compassionate approach to dealing with dark emotions. Her writing is both poetic and practical. This book has helped me develop a healthier relationship with my difficult emotions. It taught me to embrace them as integral parts of the human experience. It’s powerful in offering a path to healing through acceptance and connectedness.
